Licensed as an architect in the United States, Milena was educated in Bulgaria and the U.S. She received her master of science degree in lighting from the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

She has been an urban planner as well as an architect. In addition, Milena has taught college classes in entrepreneurship and lighting design; published articles on lighting for visual, circadian and perceptual systems; and worked with LED technology and lighting design companies.

She is an advocate for balancing energy efficiency with human factors. She focuses her practice on environments with a "natural feel and authentic beauty" that strive to use healthy lighting to create healthy work and living spaces.
