Steve is a member of the Nature Conservancy, the Urban Land Institute, Friends of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, The Theodore Roosevelt Association and an associate member of the American Institute of Architects.

He has a bachelor's degree in communications and music from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
