Thomas Van Dyck is a senior vice president with the RBC SRI Wealth Management Group, the largest sustainable wealth management practice in North America, advising the investment of over $1 billion in assets dedicated to sustainable growth.
He is a leader in the field of socially responsible investing, pioneering the practice in 1983 with Dean Witter and co-founding Progressive Asset Management in 1987. Joining Piper Jaffray in 1997, Thomas developed an investment management consulting team, now called the SRI Wealth Management Group, which moved to RBC Wealth Management in 2006. In 2004, he assisted CALPERS in adopting Green Wave, and in 2005-6, he led Piper Jaffray to create the first Clean Tech Private Equity fund of funds in the country. Along the way, Thomas authored numerous articles and studies on the economics of socially responsible investing.
Van Dyck serves on the board of several non-profit initiatives and co-founded the As You Sow Foundation in 1992 to promote labeling of toxic products. The foundation has become a leader in shareholder advocacy. Some of the more notable shareholder campaigns focus on sustainable use of environmental resources and human capital, such as the selling of sustainable harvested wood at large hardware stores (e.g. Home Depot and Lowes); codes of conduct for contact suppliers in the retail industry, (e.g. Disney, Gap, Nordstrom, Nike and Walmart); and ewaste recycling in the computer industry, (e.g. IBM, HP, Dell and Apple).
In addition to the AYS board, Thomas serves on the Board of Directors of Bioneers and works with several other civic organizations including E2, Vote Solar, Rainforest Action Network, Earthrights International, SVN, Engage, and the Ella Baker Center.
Van Dyck earned a B.A. in political science from Duke and completed the Certified Investment Management Analyst Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
