Last night, Exelon CEO John Rowe outlined what he believes are the top five most important elements for United States energy policy.

According to the electric utility CEO, mandatory economy-wide climate legislation is necessary, as is support for energy efficiency across the economy.

Rowe also believes that an economically responsible approach to renewable energy must be taken, and that financial support must be provided for clean coal and nuclear technologies. Finally, Rowe supports a commitment to competitive electricity markets.

While many of these imperatives are common sense, Rowe isn't all talk—Exelon plans on reducing or offsetting over 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020—no small feat considering the company's millions of customers.
