There's good news for those in IT and beyond who worry about the increasing problem of e-waste and how to dispose of computers, servers, and other old electronic equipment. Finding a solution to the problem in prominent the the House Science and Technology Committee's agenda for next year.

Computerworld reports that

In the area of electronics recycling, the committee will look at ways to help manufacturers make their products easier to recycle, without subjecting recycling workers to health hazards.

The newspaper quotes Rep. Bart Gordon, (D-Tenn.), the committee chairman, as warning, "Our landfills are filling up with electronics."

It appears that the committee is going to focus on research and development, rather than penalties, as a way to solve the problem. According to the committee's official agenda, the committee will:

Direct R&D programs to address the environmental and economic implications of electronic waste (e-waste) from computers, televisions, cell phones, and other consumer goods.
