Hanesbrands Inc. began shipping from a new environmentally friendly distribution center in Perris, California, earlier this week. The center is the company's largest, and is also one of the biggest warehouses in the world built to advanced environmental standards.

Hanesbrands' distribution center was constructed according to US Green Building Council Standards. If it acquires LEED certification, it will be the largest LEED-certified warehouse in Southern California.

The 1.3 million-square-foot center's green features include natural catchment basin to maximize storm water retention, motion-detection lighting, non-toxic paints and carpets, and locally produced concrete and steel.

In addition to its Perris facility, Hanesbrands is also building what is expected to be the first LEED-certified textile plant in the world in Nanjing, China.
