Wind Power Could Expand Cell Phone Service to Rural Areas

Cell phones and alternative energy are coming together in a Vermont Telecommunications Authority plan to use wind power to expand cell phone service into unserved areas.

The Authority plans on building up to 200 small-scale turbines outfitted with cellular antennas across the state over the next two years. The turbine manufacturer has been chosen, but is currently undisclosed.

Next week, the Vermont Telecommunications Authority will set up a 112-foot demonstration turbine/cell phone combination on a farm in Grafton.

While the antenna-outfitted turbine idea is currently limited to Vermont, I could think of many locations (and wind turbine manufacturers) across the United States that could benefit from similar plans.
