Everyone's favorite supplier of tape is branching out into the renewable energy sector. 3M announced Monday that it is launching a renewable energy division to decrease pressure on other portions of its business.
According to Michael Roman, the division's new head, 3M will work on "products currently sold to the industry, new-to-the-world products invented for the renewable energy market, and products adapted from existing technologies."
The renewable energy division will be divided into two units: Energy Generation and Energy Management. Energy Generation will manufacture films, tapes, coatings, encapsulants, sealants and adhesives, while Energy Management will focus on window film technology.
The company already generates $200 million annually from solar-related items, including films, tapes, coatings, and adhesives.
3M's announcement comes after news that the company's net income dropped 37 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008. Company shares also dropped 19 percent in the past two months.

Window film versus Low E, why not both? Compare
Certain window film is now tax deductible on certain types of glass. See if your glass window qualifies before you attain a quote. Ask – if the company does not have the time to answer your questions, what kind of service will you receive? Documentation is required for tax deductions.
Secondly, check with your electric company. Window film rebates are available through air conditioning savings for certain business customers. Why is this not available for homeowners? Ask your elected representative. Their web site contains a special section for these questions.
Thirdly, if you are in the window purchasing stage, make sure your new windows has heat reduction properties as well as heat retention. Then compare the window heat, light and glare reduction specifications with a good quality window film. Will both your window & film be eligible for tax deductions? What, did someone mention both purchases could qualify for tax deductions? You will need to work your purchases carefully to the tax codes and have documentation.
Be careful that your new window’s advantage only retains heat. Window technology has broadened. While heat retention is an asset in cold winter states, in warmer states most buyers should include heat and light reduction in their search. If the window or film only blocks UV, ask if the product also addresses heat & light sources. Check the Low E specs.Low E customers are surprised after installation that their new purchase only retains heat while providing a low ability to inhibit heat.
Make technology work smarter.
