DuPont announced last week that it has completed its largest photovoltaic solar array at a research facility in Kauai, Hawaii.

The Pioneer Hi-Bred Waimea Research Center features 1,500 solar panels that use DuPont photovoltaic materials. DuPont's array was produced by Evergreen Solar and installed by REC Solar. The solar panels are completely operational as of December 2008.

The installation isn't just a publicity stunt— it will generate 706,204 kilowatt hours of power annually (enough for 64 homes). Pioneer will also save $200,000 each year in electricity costs thanks to the solar array. Additionally, Pioneer's facility will avoid carbon emissions equivalent to 100 cars yearly.

DuPont produces a variety of products for the photovoltaic industry, including encapsulant sheets, polyvinyl fluoride films, PET thermoplastic resins, and thick film metallization pastes.
