Green:Net Conference to Bring IT to the Environment (and Vice Versa)

Earth2Tech's Green:Net conference, happening March 24 in San Francisco, looks at one of the topics we've covered a lot on GreenerComputing: putting IT to work in fighting climate change and other pressing environmental issues.

I've written about this before on GreenerComputing: IT has dual promise in addressing green issues: not only can it make companies' internal operations more efficient, but it can also be put to use as a solution to our biggest environmental problems, whether that's through advanced climate modeling, smart grid networks, water management, or any of dozens of other applications that we cover every day.

But for the most part, green events don't do a lot to address green IT, and IT events don't feature a lot of green (or don't connect the dots between IT and green in in-depth ways). So I'm looking forward with great anticipation to Earth2Tech's Green:Net 09, happening March 24th in San Francisco.

The schedule for the daylong event, created by GigaOM, covers a handful of regular topics on GreenerComputing: how to build and upgrade to energy efficient data centers, power management software and tools, and others; but it also goes in-depth on some topics that we can't cover enough: how the smart grid will affect everything from data centers to vehicle fleets, putting those same software tools to work on managing more than just your power bills, and how to use social networking for the greater good (and the bottom line).

The speaker list includes companies that we've covered often: IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, Google, Verdiem, the Uptime Institute, but also goes beyond the IT industry to include cleantech companies and investors, government IT professionals, and utility companies.

As a media partner for the event, we're proud to be able to offer GreenerComputing readers a 15 percent discount on attendance: go to GreenNetConf.com and use "GREENER" as your discount code to get the 15 percent off.

Hope to see you there!
