Ian Kalin

Presidential Innovation Fellow
U.S. Department of Energy

Ian Kalin has been called one of the “most badass innovators on the planet” by US Chief Technology Officer, Todd Park. Kalin started his professional career as a Counter-Terrorism Officer in the US Navy, later serving as a Nuclear Engineer onboard the USS Ronald Reagan. After the Navy, Kalin joined a rising company called PowerAdvocate, which delivered procurement technology and consulting solutions to utility companies. Ian helped the company expand its product offerings to include “Big Data” market-intelligence solutions and power plant construction support; personally culminating in the supply chain leadership of over $40 billion worth of contract negotiations. Kalin leads the Energy Data Initiative for the Department of Energy. In this role, Ian seeks to liberate data as a fuel for innovation. By treating data as a fuel, literally, the Federal government can better empower Americans.
