Job Description

SmartWood (SW), a program of the Rainforest Alliance created in 1989, is the oldest global forestry certification program and has been accredited by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). SW's mission is to promote the implementation of sustainable forestry worldwide. To accomplish this, SW provides forest management and chain of custody certification services. Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification verifies the flow of certified forest products through the supply chain, from the forest to the point of sale, assuring consumers and forest product companies that the wood they buy comes from certified forests.

SW seeks four opportunities located in Northfield, MN or Richmond, VT:
• Chain-of-Custody Manager, US Region, SmartWood Program
• Chain-of-Custody Coordinator, US Region, SmartWood Program
• Chain-of-Custody Associate, US Region, SmartWood Program.
• Chain-of-Custody Assistant, US Region, SmartWood Program.

The CoC Manager will manage the execution of SW CoC certification services for new and existing SW clients in the U.S. In collaboration with the Regional Manager, s/he will develop and implement strategic business planning and budget management for the U.S. Region CoC portfolio. S/he will also oversee and manage customer service, consultant management and quality control. S/he will supervise four to eight CoC Coordinators. Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Forest Products, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field; Master’s Degree preferred; 7-10 years work experience required, preferably in forest product industry, forestry or related field.

The CoC Coordinator will coordinate the execution of SW CoC certification services for new and existing SW clients in the U.S. S/he will be directly involved in all aspects of CoC certification assessments and audits including scheduling, project management, customer service, consultant management and quality control. S/he will mentor staff to ensure that SW has capacity to grow. S/he will be responsible for ensuring timely completion of audits and assessments for a defined portfolio. S/he will supervise two to four CoC Associates/Assistants. Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Forest Products, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field; 3-5 years work experience required, preferably in forest product industry, forestry or related field.

The CoC Associate will coordinate and process the execution of SW CoC certification services for a subset of new and existing SW clients in the US. S/he will be directly involved in all aspects of CoC certification assessments and audits including scheduling, project management, customer service, management of contract auditors and quality control. The CoC Associate will also be expected to participate in projects as an auditor. Bachelor’s degree required, concentration in Forest Products, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field preferred; 2-3 years work experience required, preferably in forest product industry, forestry, paper and print industry or related field, and environmental management system auditor training experience preferred.

The CoC Assistant will be responsible for providing general administrative support for the execution of SW CoC certification services for new and existing SW clients in the US. S/he will be directly involved in various administrative aspects of CoC certification assessments and audits including scheduling, assisting CoC Associates in the preparation of cost proposals and client communications, and providing preliminary review of reports. BA preferred; minimum of 1-2 years of administrative experience, and background or interest in forestry and/or forest products preferred.
