8:30 - 9:30

Keynote: William McDonough

Bill McDonough, internationally acclaimed architect and designer, has been a leading advocate of rethinking our designs — of buildings, products, and systems. His Cradle-to-Cradle methodology for evaluating chemicals and materials has been adopted by such companies as Alcoa, Armstrong, Herman Miller, Method, Owens Corning, Steelcase, and the U.S. Postal Service. Recognized as a “Hero for the Planet” by Time Magazine, McDonough will share his insights on sustainable design, making the case that products and systems can be transformed to generate ecological, social and economic value.

9:30 - 10:15

"Innovation Matters"

At its core, green product design is less about “greening up” than rethinking product design, manufacturing, and delivery systems. Meet Angela Nahikian from Steelcase, Adam Lowry from Method, and others from leading companies who have integrated their innovation and environmental goals in a way that not only is creating new business value, but is delighting customers and employees alike.

10:15 - 10:45

Green Flash #1

A product development case study from Sam Lucente, Vice President of Integrated Design, Hewlett Packard.

10:45 - 11:15 Networking Break

At Greener By Design, even bio-breaks are designed to facilitate networking, enabling attendees to move past random encounters to more efficiently and effectively identify aligned thinkers and potential partners.

11:15 - 12:00

“The New Metrics of Design”

Today, the challenge of marketplace success hinges less on what you can say, but on what you can prove. Toward that end, companies are developing sophisticated metrics — for both themselves and their suppliers — that allow them to assess the design and life-cycle of products . . . and to communicate that to a variety of audiences. Hear Wal-Mart’s Rand Waddoups and other leaders to hear how metrics are becoming a growing force behind design decisions.

12:00 - 1:00 Lunch
1:00 - 2:30

Systematic Inventive Thinking: Sustainability + Innovation + Recession = ?

Amnon Levav and his team — whose firm SIT has helped more than 850 companies in 54 countries develop products, processes, and services that are sustainable and profitable — will lead an experiential 90-minute session guaranteed to realign your thinking. The goal: to understand how the seemingly conflicting goals of corporate environmental leadership, product innovation, and the economic turmoil are actually aligned. This session will demonstrate how complex challenges can be used methodically to derive truly inventive solutions that can both improve environmental impact and the bottom line. At last year’s conference, SIT’s sessions (including two “Innovation Flashes” on Day Two) were highly acclaimed by attendees.

2:30 - 3:00 Networking Break
3:00 - 3:30

Keynote: David de Rothschild

Artist and Adventure Ecology founder David de Rothschild has set out a bold and audacious goal: to navigate a boat he’s designed, made primarily of plastic bottles and dubbed the Plastiki, through the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch, a floating landfill located between California and Hawaii that’s twice the size of Texas. During the voyage, he plans to highlight other environmental problems to a crew of filmmakers and scientists, including the Bikini Atoll (to examine nuclear fallout) and the sinking island of Tuvalu (to investigate global warming).

3:30 - 4:15

“When Designer Meets Client: A Conversation Between Intel and Frog”

The complex interaction between designer and client and make or break a project’s sustainability goals and ideals. Leadership in sustainability requires agility and the ability to maintain focus on the big picture while driving initiatives down into the core of the business. The interplay of business goals, design constraints, and environmental leadership can lead a project to breakthrough or break down. In this on-stage conversation, Eric Wilmot of Frog Design and Ryan Parker of Intel will share an intimate conversation on the challenges and successes achieved over several eco-design and outreach programs.

4:15 - 5:15

Innovators' Showcase

Meet eight designers of innovative products, packaging, and materials from both large and smaller companies in this lightning-round, hourlong session. Listen to these innovators compelling elevator pitches in record time — then meet them in the Innovation Pavilion for a one-on-one demonstration.

Day One review, and Day Two preview

8:30 - 9:15

Keynote: Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO, TerraCycle

Szaky’s wacky beginning — making fertilizer from worm poop, sold in reused plastic soda bottles — turned out to be fertile ground for a revolutionary approach to product design — and business design. Today, TerraCycle operates three large facilities manufacturing in North America and makes more than 50 consumer products, partnering with companies like Kraft, Hershey’s, Frito-Lay, and Starbucks. The secret sauce: recycling stuff that people don't value into usable products. The result is a company and a brand that has re-energized the concepts of reuse and recycling, while hewing to three simple brand principles: Better, Greener, Cheaper.

9:15 - 9:30

Innovation Flash

The first of two hands-on experiential interludes led by Amnon Levav at SIT.

9:30 - 10:15

“The New Drivers”

What’s driving your company to pursue green product design? It might be customers, but it could be others, from retailers to regulations, standards to stockholders. In this session, learn from experts on carbon regulation, product toxicity, and shareholder activism about how regulators, activists, supply chains, and designers are creating a push for new design ethics, standards, and regulations.

10:15 - 10:45 Networking Break
10:45 - 11:15

Green Flash #3

A product development case study from Paul Ligon, Managing Director of Waste Management's GreenOps, LLC.

11:15 - 12:00

“Packaging Outside the Box”

For some products, packaging represents a significant portion of its impact. A great many products are overpackaged, or contain materials that are unrecyclable. Others use petro-based plastics where bio-based ones might do. However, a new generation of packaging is emerging that uses fewer materials, and more environmentally desirable ones. Hear award-winning designer Wendy Jedlicka in conversation with Hewlett Packard's Uri Kogan and Frito-Lay's Tony Knoerzer in a discussion of how companies are rethinking "the box."

12:00 - 1:00 Lunch
1:00-1:45

Green Gurus at Play™

During these back-to-back 45-minute blocks, you’ll have the opportunity to meet in small-group consultative sessions with hand-picked “gurus” from among our speakers and invited guests. Prior to the event, delegates will sign up to meet with specific gurus — first come, first served — for one 45-minute session. For those not meeting with gurus, a town hall-style Q&A session with other conference presenters will take place on the Main Stage. At last year’s event, this unique activity was the single most highly rated part of the conference.

1:45 to 2:30

Green Gurus at Play™

The second 45-minute block of small-group consultative sessions.

2:30-3:00 Networking Break
3:00-3:30
