Global Manufacturer Nabs ISO 14001 Certification for 26 Facilities

Modine Manufacturing Company has met its self-imposed target of implementing an environmental management system (EMS) at 26 of its manufacturing locations.

Modine Manufacturing Company has met its self-imposed target of implementing an environmental management system (EMS) at 26 of its manufacturing locations. The global producer of heating and cooling equipment instituted its ambitious EMS program in January 2002.

"[This] reinforces our commitment to improving our environmental performance by providing a common and structured approach for preventing pollution, eliminating waste and reducing environmental risks in our operations," said David Rayburn, Modine president and CEO. “We are already realizing reduced environmental impacts and are benefiting from associated cost savings as a result."

Modine's EMS is based on the internationally recognized ISO 14001 standard. The backbone of the program, according to the company, is to drive environmental stewardship throughout the organization and incorporate it into the company's daily business activities. The EMS aims to “standardize the process of management of environmental issues on a global format and formally expresses its commitment to continual improvement.”

"We are confident that the long-term strategic benefits and potential savings will be well worth our efforts,” said Gary Fahl, Modine's environmental health and safety officer. “An EMS adds value to our company for the community, customers and stockholders.”

To establish Modine's EMS at the facility level required buy-in from the company’s employees worldwide. Employees identified programs to surpass facility-specific as well as companywide goals. Some of these goals included eliminating chemicals, reducing waste and air emissions, and conserving water, together with continual improvement in a wide variety of environmental areas.

"All 26 of our targeted facilities have now been certified using a third-party auditor," added Fahl. This certification also satisfies certain customer requirements, including DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Ford, Volvo, Hyundai, Kia and others. The 26 locations that achieved the ISO 14001 certification are located in the U.S., Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Mexico, and the Netherlands.

Looking ahead, the company has identified five additional locations that will implement Modine's EMS, including Thermacore, Modine's Electronics Cooling Division facilities in Ashington, England and Hsinchu, Taiwan; Modine Korea; the corporate headquarters in Racine, Wis.; and the European corporate office in Bonlanden, Germany.

Modine has been named one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens by Business Ethics magazine. The company is also a member of the Domini 400 Social Index of companies exhibiting strong social and environmental performance.
