Milliken Launches Energy Conservation Initiative

Milliken & Co. launched an Energy Conservation Initiative Friday to further reduce energy consumption, water use and greenhouse gas emissions.

The carpet manufacturer plans to expand energy conservation activities and undergo a complete energy audit at Milliken Floor Covering to lower energy consumption and increase efficiencies. Its workers will join the ENERGY STAR pledge by replacing traditional light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights.

The company announced the initiative during Respect Our Earth Day at Milliken Floor Covering location.

"Respect Our Earth is a philosophy championed by our Chairman Roger Milliken for more than 65 years," said Russell Grizzle, president of Milliken's Global Floor Covering Division. "He has inspired our company to make continual advances in reducing our impact on the planet. Today, we challenge ourselves, our associates and our communities to make a difference by lowering energy consumption."

The initiative will focus on four areas: people, alternative sources, innovation and green building. It aims to increase awareness among associates to alter practices at home and work, as well as expanding the exploration of energy resources. The initiative will be used to apply technological advances to lower energy consumption and register company buildings with LEED.

Already the company has registered its Spartanburg, S.C. headquarters and LaGrange Design Center with LEED. It registered its Chicago Merchandise Mart showroom with LEED 2.0 for Commercial Interiors earlier this year.

The company said it has generated zero manufacturing waste since 1999 and is under contract to use at least 80 percent of the methane harvested from the local landfill, which accounts for 30 percent of its natural gas consumption. Although production has increased, Milliken Floor Covering has lowered water and energy consumption by 50 percent since 1995.

The company makes carpets and related items that extend the lifetime of the products. Tiles of its modular carpet, Earth Square, is made from 100 percent post-consumer product. In 1986, the company developed a PVC-free carpet backing. It also created a bio-based, adhesive-free carpet installation system called TractionBack.
