CHICAGO, Ill. -- At the U.S. Green Building Council's Greenbuild Expo last week, the nonprofit Green Cleaning Network (GCN) joined with eco-consultants The Leonardo Academy to unveil a plan to help the industrial and institutional cleaning industry reduce its emissions and environmental impact.
Citing the huge, decentralized nature of the industry, GCN Executive Director Stephen Ashkin made the case for why now is the time for the industry to act together.
"Climate change is going to be one of the most important issues of our time," Ashkin said. "While the cleaning industry certainly isn't the major cause of the problem, because we are such a huge industry comprised of over 70,000 companies, hundreds of thousands of vehicles and employing approximately four million people we have to do our part and we can make an important contribution to the solution."
Ashkin said the initiative aims to raise companies' awareness about both the extent of their impact and the potential ways to reduce that impact. Companies that promote green cleaning, he said, have already taken the first step on the road to sustainability, and reducing emissions is the next big step.
Registration in the initiative costs $200, for which companies will receive a carbon footprint assessment and information on how to offset anywhere from 50 percent to 300 percent of those emissions.
The website for the initiative is CleaningIndustryClimateInitiative.org.
