MANCHESTER, — A non-profit trying to fight climate change has rated the shipping sector for its global warming efforts.

The U.S. Postal Service and DHL topped the list of shipping companies and organizations based on four benchmarks: measuring and tracking their carbon footprint, taking steps to minimize impact, their support or opposition to climate policies, and how they report their efforts to the public.

DHL scored 45 points out of 100 while the U.S. Postal Service achieved a score of 43. United Parcel Service ranked third with 39 points, followed by FedEx with 28 points.

"While we're pleased that the shipping sector has begun to take action on climate, but like most of us in the business community, they have a long way to go," Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farm and Climate Counts board chair, said in a statement.

The shipping industry rating brings the total number of companies rated by Climate Counts to 60. The group compiled all company rankings into an index being released today called the Holiday Shopping Guide. The guide is available for a pocket-sized download through the organization's website, or via mobile phone through a partnership with CREDO Mobile.

Canon, Nike and Unilever lead the index with top scores. Near the bottom are companies that include Amazon.com and Levi Strauss.
