UK Food and Drink Companies Vow Water Reductions
Published January 28, 2008
UNITED KINGDOM, United States — A number of major food and drink companies have agreed to drastically improve water efficiency, possibly saving about 37 million gallons a day.
So far, 21 United Kingdom food and drink manufacturers have signed the Food and Drink Federation's Federation House Commitment to Water Efficiency, agreeing to review their water use and reduce it as much as possible.
Crafters of the plan estimate water-efficiency measures could reduce water use by as much as 37 million gallons (about 140 million liters) a day and save the companies around $87 million (about £60 million) a year.
The commitment is part of the Food and Drink Federation's industry-wide goal of cutting water use by 20 percent between 2007 and 2020, as well as a portion of the FDF's Five-fold Environmental Ambition, which includes goals for reducing CO2 emissions, food waste, packaging and transport.
The first 21 food and drink manufacturers to sign the commitment are Apetito, Birds Eye Iglo, Britvic, Cadbury Schweppes, Coca-Cola Enterprises, GlaxoSmithKline, Kellogg Marketing & Sales Co, Kraft Foods UK, Mars Snackfood, Müller Dairy, Nestlé UK, PepsiCo UK, Premier Foods, Tate & Lyle, UIN Foods, Unilever UK, Uniq, United Biscuits, Warburtons, Weetabix, and Young's Seafood.
Any food and drink company can sign onto the Federation House Commitment to Water Efficiency.
