PALO ALTO, Calif. -- HP is ramping up production of inkjet cartridges made of recycled used cartridges, water bottles and other plastics.
Since 2005, the company has manufactured more than 200 million inkjet cartridges with recycled content. By turning old HP cartridges into new ones, the company says it has diverted about 8.8 million pounds of recyclable plastic from landfills.
HP's recycling process allows the company to produce ink cartridges made up of 70 to 100 percent recycled content.
Last year HP used more than 5 million pounds of different types of recycled plastic in manufacturing inkjet cartridges. The company plans to double the amount of recycled content used this year.
HP uses ink cartridges returned though its Planet Partners product recycling program, which allows consumers to return HP products to the company for free.
The company recently introduced new energy-efficient PCs, pledged to reduce its laptop and PC energy use by one-fourth and laid out CSR and environmental guidelines for businesses in its supply chain. Last year HP reached 1 billion pounds of electronics and products recycled and redesigned cartridge packaging to reduce materials used as well as to optimize transportation and storage.
it's about time!
There are plenty of companies, such as http://www.castleink.com, that have been doing this since 2001. HP realized that they needed to compete -- and from a PR perspective look "green".
Printer manufactures are wasteful
When will HP and other printer manufacturers stop manufacturing so many different printer models? What is the justification for producing so many models of an A4 printer? I can understand having three models, basic, intermediate, premium. Past this it is sheer wastefulness of precious resources. When will manufacturers take the next step and have standardised ink cartidges or toner sizes across their brand? What is the justification for their current practices?

In reply to "Printer manufacturers are wasteful"...
...itβs pretty simple - they do it to earn more money of course!
By producing a cascade of new printer models and new cartridge systems they buy time before compatible cartridges reaches the market. These are produced by being refilled by third party producers which needs a big enough amount of old cartridges to be able to invest time/resources into refilling a new cartridge model.
Printer makers make much more money on selling their supplies than selling their printers.
