LONDON, UK -- Marks and Spencer has earned a reputation as the greenest UK company according to a survey that also named BP the biggest greenwasher.

Chatsworth Communications' recent FOOTSIE 100 Green Winners and Green Washers Survey polled more than 1,200 UK national and trade journalists, sustainability experts and political groups about their thoughts on how green companies in the FTSE 100 Index are.

Just over half of respondents see Marks and Spencer as the greenest company, followed by BSkyB (9 percent) and HSBC (7 percent). Marks and Spencer announced its green effort, Plan A, early last year, with goals of becoming carbon neutral, sending no waste to landfills and expand sustainable sourcing. The 100-point plan also touches on reducing packaging, eliminating plastic bags, renewable energy and healthier food.

Those surveyed were generally cynical towards the reasons behind companies going green. Twenty-seven percent said companies have gone green to protect their reputation, 20 percent said consumer pressure has been the main motivator and 18 percent said businesses take up green policies because it makes good business sense.

BP was named by 38 percent of those surveyed as the company guiltiest of greenwashing, with 21 percent calling out Tesco and 10 percent labeling British Airways the biggest greenwasher.
