Equinix Data Centers Get 'Certified'

Data center operator Equinix Inc. said Tuesday all of its Silicon Valley centers have received certification under the Bay Area Green Business Program for measures undertaken in areas such as purchasing, recycling and energy conservation.

The company, which runs four Silicon Valley Internet Business Exchange centers, also joined The Green Grid to help drive efficiencies in data center design and operation.

“Since the construction of the first Equinix IBX data center in the Silicon Valley nearly 10 years ago, we have been keenly aware of the efficiencies that can be achieved through innovative design, equipment and programs,” said Equinix Chief Business Officer Margie Backaus.

The Green Business Program was created by local Bay Area governments, business community, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California EPA Department of Toxic Substances Control. Certification is contingent on an external audit by local government officials.

Equinix has over time implemented data center design that “leverages the efficiencies of scale,” created equipment deployments such as hot aisle and cold aisle configurations and sought renewable energy.
