Basware Provides Guidelines for Greening a Supply Chain
Published June 25, 2008
OAKLAND, Calif. — If a company wants to lessen the impact of its supply chain, it must first have an overall, organization-wide strategy, according to Basware, a provider of financial process automation software.
Basware offers these guidelines for companies that want to green their supply chains by basing purchases both on the value from vendors and their compliance with green initiatives and values.
A company should first determine its purchasing strategy, identifying and prioritizing buying criteria. By establishing streamlined and flexible processes, a company can ensure it can easily implement and enforce policies. Rules-based eProcurement systems can include criteria from purchasing policies.
A purchasing system should also be easy to use and put in place company-wide. In addition it should be flexible and continually updated and improved. Small tweaks with measurable gains can be more important that large system overhauls, according to Basware.
Another consideration for a purchasing policy is to reduce paper use by automating invoicing, a move than can cut down on resources as well as increase efficiency.
