STURTEVANT, Wis. -- The maker of Signature, Johnson Wax Professional and Butcher's said its reformulation of floor finishes has decreased the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of a leading product line, achieving a result more than two years earlier than required by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

JohnsonDiversey said Signature is the first product in its floor care line to meet the new CARB standard that limits VOC to 1 percent effective Jan. 1, 2011. The reformulated Signature, the firm said, now has a VOC content that represents a 40 percent reduction without diminishing the performance of the product that JohnsonDiversey describes as its market-leading, ultra-highspeed floor finish.

When a floor finish is used the VOC it contains releases emissions, affecting air quality.  The new standard seeks to lessen the environmental impact by requiring decreased VOC content.

"We're committed to continuously improving our products to meet the highest standards of health, safety, environment and performance," JohnsonDiversey President and CEO Ed Lonergan said in a statement. "The CARB limit was a serious challenge, but once again we've shown it is possible to reduce the environmental impact of products while also maintaining high quality standards."

According to the company, 15 floor-finish products under brand names of Johnson Wax Professional and Butcher's are being reformulated to meet the new air board standard. Signature, the company's largest selling floor finish, also represents the largest volume of product already reformulated.

JohnsonDiversey is a leading global provider of cleaning and hygiene solutions.
