OAKLAND, Calif. -- Fairchild Semiconductor has formed a global Energy and Environmental Design Team, building on the efforts of local environmental teams at its major locations.

The company-wide design team is focusing on conserving energy at manufacturing sites. Each local team at facilities and departments work on ways to save energy at their locations, and they share that information and best practices when the global team meets.

Salamander Designs
, a maker of home entertainment systems furniture and products, has created its own Green Operations Initiative, a company-wide effort to develop better practices for manufacturing products and operating facilities.

The company is examining how to reduce energy use, create efficient production, use recycled materials and make recyclable products. Salamander has already taken some green steps, using recyclable aluminum with high recycled content, reducing packaging and using efficient lighting.
