Columbus, Ohio -- The state of Ohio is launching an advanced energy masters degree program in a bid to train the next generation of highly-skilled, green collar workers.

The University of Dayton and Wright State University will award the two-year degrees, while Central State University and Air Force Institute of Technology will offer classes.

The move adds to the state's efforts to turn Ohio into a renewable energy hub. For instance, the state launched the Third Frontier Project, a $1.6 billion, 10-year initiative aimed at cultivating private and academic relationships to foster high-tech research and business creation. Ohio's Energy, Jobs and Progress plan also will focus on modernizing the energy infrastructure and attracting renewable energy jobs.

"Ohio is at the heart of next-generation, advanced energy industry success," Ed Burghard, executive director of the Ohio Business Development Coalition, said in a statement. "In addition to the development of a highly skilled workforce to meet the ever-growing green collar industry demands, Ohio-based companies benefit from the state's continued effort to focus on creating a profit-friendly business environment through revamped tax and tort laws."

In other news, Butte College received a grant from the National Science Foundation, enabling the community college in Oroville, Calif., to offer two green building technology courses for students, landscapers, interior designers and facility managers. A third course focuses on energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
