The Environmental Protection Agency and the National Science Foundation are encouraging small businesses that want to grow, add workers and expand into new markets involving environmental technology to apply for funding that is now available through the Small Business Innovation Research programs at both agencies.

Awards of as much as $150,000 from a funding pool of $185 million are available in Phase I of the National Science Foundation's SBIR program. The solicitation period is now open and the deadline for proposals is June 9. The foundation is looking for proposals that address biotech and chemical technologies, education applications, information and communication technologies and nanotechnology, advanced materials and manufacturing. The solicitation period for Phase I awards of as much as $70,000 from the EPA, which is drawing on a $3 million SBIR funding pool, opens on March 19 and closes on May 20. The EPA is accepting proposals from science and technology-based firms. For more information about the EPA's program, visit

Businesses with fewer than 500 employees are eligible for the programs and may apply to both agencies for funding, but can accept an award from only one of the agencies.
