Corporate Green Power Buyers Reach Purchasing Goal a Year Early

The Green Power Market Development Group, a consortium of industry-leading companies founded by the World Resources Institute, announced that its members have purchased enough renewable energy to displace a large coal-fired power plant.

Following on the heels of the release of the annual Green Power Partnership list from the EPA, a group of industry-leading companies announced today that their coalition had hit their target for renewable energy purchases a year ahead of schedule.

The Green Power Market Development Group, founded by the World Resources Institute in 2000, had set a ten-year target for purchasing 1,000 megawatts of cost-competitive renewable energy; the group hit the goal a year early, according to today's announcement. That amount of energy is enough to eliminate the need for one carbon-intensive coal-fired power plant.

"Around the country, the legacy of passive energy consumption is being replaced with smarter, proactive energy management," said Jonathan Lash, WRI president. "Energy, environment, and financial managers are focusing on cost and performance, and at the same time, they're harnessing nature's power."

The Group consist of 15 companies: Alcoa, Dow Chemical, DuPont, FedEx, General Motors, Georgia-Pacific, Google, IBM, Interface, Johnson & Johnson, Michelin, Natureworks, Pitney Bowes, Staples and Starbucks.

Four of the companies in the Green Power Market Development Group -- Dupont, Johnson & Johnson, Staples and Starbucks -- also made the EPA's Green Power Top 50 list.

Along with the announcement of hitting the green power purchasing goal, the WRI is also releasing a new report, "Harnessing Nature's Power: Deploying and Financing On-Site Renewable Energy," which explores strategies for companies that are looking to invest in green power and implement renewable energy systems at their own facilities. The report also looks at innovations in green power financing and success stories from companies that have made these projects work.
