Aiming to collect at least 200,000 compacts, and pledging to plant a tree in Montana's Bitterroot National Forest for each one collected, Mary Kay exceeded its goal in less than a year.
Mary Kay is continuing its compact recycling program through July, and customers can turn in compacts to be recycled by contacting a Mary Kay consultant. The Dallas-based Citizens Development Center is assisting the effort by breaking down all the compacts.
The company chose to plant trees in Bitterroot National Forest because the U.S. Forest Service identified it, the largest expanse of wilderness in the United States, as in need of replanting. The 200,000 new trees, planted in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, will provide habitat for animals, clean the air and prevent soil erosion.

Go Mary Kay!
Whoever posted the pinktruth comment obviously doesn't know our products that well. First of all, the old compacts were recycled not "filling landfills". Second of all, the old compact system meant that you had to have one compact for your face powder/ foundation, another for cheek color, and yet ANOTHER one for your eye colors. The new compact reduces waste by having only one compact that is just slightly bigger than ONE of the older compacts and it allows you to customize it with eye color, cheek color, and foundation any way you want. For example, I don't use powder foundation so mine is filled with more eye colors and cheek colors. Therefore, they ARE reducing waste. And obviously the Green Design staff are going to do their research before posting such an article because of all the green washing that has been going on lately.
In addition, Mary Kay planted one tree for every compact that was recycled. So I say GO MARY KAY! I know you had a poor experience with Mary Kay but don't you think it is time for you to take responsibility for your own actions rather than taking it out on Mary Kay? Stop trying to put down this wonderful company and all of the great things it does. Take responsibility for your own actions or inactions and stop trying to be a victim.
Clever Mary Kay
The new compacts were not created because of the need for a "refill" system to cut down on compacts. The old compacts were already refillable.
This product change was simply a money grab for Mary Kay. They needed more sales, so why not change the products, forcing customers and consultants to buy new compacts and new products (in different shapes than the old compact)???
For those 200,000 compacts turned in, Mary Kay made millions of dollars. Yes, they're needlessly filling landfills while lining their pockets. Green shmeen.
Thanks for the plug for Mary Kay!
As a Mary Kay Consultant, I am especially proud of all the things Mary Kay does in its ongoing Pink Doing Green effort. For at least the last 30 years, all Mary Kay compacts have been refillable and completely customizable. Not only is this great for our customers and their wallets, but it's always been great for the environment because there is less waste produced. And that's just one of the many ways that Mary Kay aims to be a Green cosmetics company, but it's certainly the most visible to our clients.
My only issue with your post is that it would have been nice if you'd included a picture of a Mary Kay compact rather than products from an unknown competitor.
