Trenton, NJ — TerraCycle, the company that upcycles waste into useful products, has added universal speakers to its offerings.
The company partnered with Merkury Innovations, a producer of consumer electronics accessories, to make portable, foldable speakers with Frito-Lay product wrappers. The speakers do not require batteries and just plug into devices with a 3.5mm universal plug.
The speakers are just one of many products TerraCycle has turned snack wrapper into, including tote bags, backpacks, business
card holders, pencil cases, pocket portfolios and more.
TerraCycle has so far collected more than 5 million chip bags in the one year it has been taking them in, and donated $6,500 to school and charities for those that were collected by its Chip Bag Brigades.

Re-purposing trash
TerraCycle has the right idea! Making useful and interesting stuff from our trash is certainly not new. Anyone who has had grandma make a quilt or managed a household repair using the "wrong" part has been part of this process. The innovation at TerryCycle is from the community involvement and the volume of the projects they attempt. My hope is that they will be a huge financial success and that will prompt others to reconsider what is trash and what can be re-done.
