HOUSTON, TX — Sprint has cut the ribbon on its first environmentally friendly retail site -- a store in Houston that features energy efficient lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures and low VOC building materials.

The telecom company announced the store's opening yesterday. No. 15 in Newsweek's 2009 Green Rankings, Sprint has 1,100 retail sites.

Sprint's first store to be built with green design elements is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the location by about 19,000 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent when compared to a conventionally designed structure of similar size.

Water-frugal fixtures are expected to save 12,000 gallons of H2O a year, enabling a 54 percent cut in water consumption. Energy consumption for lighting is expected to drop 25 percent as a result of greater efficiency and better equipment. Use of Energy Star appliances and equipment also is expected to trim power consumption.

Indoor air quality is expected improve as a result of paint, carpet and other material that contained low concentrations of volatile organic compounds.
