Energy efficiency giant Johnson Controls has joined The Climate Group, the international nonprofit focused on finding smart policies and technologies to cut global emissions and advance development of a low-carbon economy.

The firm announced the move this week at the Climate Leaders' Summit in Copenhagen, which included key leaders of Johnson Controls' sustainability efforts.

Johnson Controls has committed to reducing its total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions per dollar of revenue by 30 percent between 2002 and 2012. The firm participates in the Global Reporting Initiative as well as the Carbon Disclosure Project.

The company has made energy efficiency the centerpiece of its lines of business: buildings, automotive and power solutions. The firm's products and services include energy efficient building retrofits, on-site renewable energy applications, lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles, and lightweight vehicle interior components.

Founded in 2004, The Climate Group now has operations in Australia, China, Europe, India and North America. Its members include more than 60 companies and governments. It also has about 30 associate members representing companies, NGOs and governmental groups.
