Drink Cartons Lighten Up in Europe

Finland-based packaging maker Stora Enso has developed a lighter version of its packaging board for milk, juice and other liquids.

Packaging manufacturer Stora Enso had reduce the amount of raw materials that go into its Natura packaging board for drink cartons.

The company reduced the weight of the packaging - and also made changes to improve the quality of printing on the paperboard - in response to customer demand for packaging with lower environmental impacts.

The new Natura material is being used by packaging manufacturers like Elopak, which is using it to make milk cartons that will be sold throughout the Nordic market.

Natura is also used to package juice, tea, coffee, wine and other drinks as well as non-food products like detergent.

The changes to Natura were made as a result of a £39.4m investment in equipment through 2008 and 2009 at Stora Enso's mill in Finland.
