U.S. Bucks World Trend in Lack of Concern for Climate Change

NEW YORK, NY — Retail investors from cities other than in the U.S. feel that climate change is the biggest issue facing the world, according to the HSBC Bank Global Pulse survey.

Representing 11 cities around the world, the 2,044 respondents answered questions about their preferences and behaviors regarding economic outlook, financial concerns and other topics. Responses came from Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, Paris, Sao Paulo, Sydney and Toronto/Vancouver.

When asked what the three main issues facing the world are, the respondents from the U.S. put the economy and terrorism (40 percent and 39 percent, respectively) in the number one and number two spots. Twenty-six percent said climate change was the biggest issue.

Climate change was named the number one issue by the majority of respondents elsewhere, though. The percentage that named it the most important ranged from 62 percent from Hong Kong to 32 percent from Paris.

The economy took second or third place for all other cities except Paris. Terrorism was cited by London, Paris, Sydney and Toronto/Vancouver. Energy was named the third most important issue by Hong Kong. Poverty was the third most important issue for Paris. And government was the second most important issue to Sao Paulo.
