LONDON, United Kingdom — A new, free app for iOS lets employees power up their computers while they're still out of the office, and enables better power management practices in the enterprise.
The app, 1E WakeUp, works for companies that have installed 1E's WebWakeUp wake-on-LAN software. The program brings remote access to workers' machines, and can let systems administrators make sure machines are fully patched while also not running at full power all night long.
1E says that its WakeUp solution has been put to work on 14 million computers around the world, helping more than 1,100 organizations save $530 million in energy costs and cutting CO2 emissions by those groups by 4.3 million tons.
Putting access to WebWakeUp in the palm of employees' hands can make it easier for workers to get started by letting them fire up software before arriving at the office, and also gives IT professionals another tool to diagnose machines remotely or while on the go.
PC power management is one of the most popular and successful ways companies can gather up the low-hanging fruit from their IT departments. It's been put to use to great success by a wide range of organizations, including Ford, which saves $1.2 million a year by turning off idle computers, and King County, Wash., which cut its energy use 38 percent through power management.
For companies that haven't yet gotten started on cutting costs and emissions from their PC fleets, read our recent article, "10 Things to Know About PC Power Management" for a quick, deep dive on making power management work for your company.
