NEW YORK CITY, NY — It may have angered Republicans, but plans to build a new Islamic community centre two blocks away from the Ground Zero site in lower Manhattan could put a smile on the face of environmentalists after reports suggested the building would become America's first green mosque.
Writing on the influential U.S. website The Daily Beast yesterday, U.S. author and environmental policy consultant Ibrahim Abdul-Matin revealed that the centre would be the first U.S. mosque to be fully compliant with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
Abdul-Matin said the project, known originally as the Cordoba House project, has been rebranded as Park51 to reflect the centre's environmental credentials.
"The mosque (which is more accurately a community center with a prayer space) is located on Park Place in downtown Manhattan," [sic] he wrote, "but the new name also reflects a desire to emphasize the intricate (though widely unknown) connections between Islamic teachings and environmentalism."
The revelation could prompt a fresh bout of apoplexy among Republicans opposed to the proposed development.
Last week, plans for the mosque took another step forward when New York City's Landmark Preservation Commission unanimously voted not to extend landmark status of the building on the site of the proposed project.
However, leading Republican commentators are continuing to wage a ferocious campaign against the project, arguing that the Islamic centre's close proximity to the location of the 9/11 attacks as insensitive.
Outspoken former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin recently crystalised the campaign against the mosque using her Twitter account. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing," [sic] she wrote.
Regardless of the controversy the development provides further evidence of the growing popularity of the LEED certification scheme, which requires developers to embrace high standards of energy and water efficiency, and encourages them to use sustainable building materials and renewable energy technologies.
According to the U.S. Green Building Council, which runs the LEED scheme, there are now around 14,000 LEED certified projects in the U.S. and 30 other countries and more than 140,000 LEED professional credential holders.

Gosh, I thought 3,000
Gosh, I thought 3,000 Democrats, Republicans, independents, environmentalists and other Americans and foreigners were victims of 9/11? How naive of me to believe Democrats and environmentalists give a damn about innocent human lives.
As long as it's green it's OK to offend the sensibilities of some Americans who continue to feel the pain of 9/11.
I think a green abortion mill would be the ideal environmental pet project at this point in history.
The statement of the card-carrying environmentalist confirms that environmentalism is a mindless, fanatical cult for many supporters.
I lived Sept. 11 fairly up
I lived Sept. 11 fairly up close and personal. (http://old.911digitalarchive.org/stories/details/10016) I still live in New York City and, frankly, since freedom of religion and expression are still protected by the US Constitution (for now, anyway), I don't for a moment see how the Islamic center's location can be an issue. The arguments about "sensitivity" are hogwash. This is about Islamophobia. Remember when your White Knight, George W. Bush, said "They hate our freedoms?" Well, you seem to hate our freedoms too if you think the center needs to be moved.
P.S. I'm a lifelong, card-carrying environmentalist and am thrilled that the Center is seeking LEED certification.
Near ground zero was second
Near ground zero was second choice of location for this facility. The organization first considered property on 23rd street. If the right is so adament to "...let the free market self regulate" , then why isn't anyone getting all over the property owner who offered this site up for the legal use. Walk around the area and you will see the muslim clture in restaurants, shops and passers by. Many Muslims were also attacked on 9/11. This is supposed to be America, where one of the risks of religious freedoms we allow is to permit faiths to flourish wherever it may.
Let's not let this local issue get in the way of more meaningful issues this election season.
Use Common Sense. Build It.
Use Common Sense. Build It.
"Islam" isn't responsible for the 9-11 attacks. "Muslims" didn't attack NYC. Al Queda is responsible - a radically religious militant terrorist organization. The U.S. is fighting Al Queda. We aren't fighting Islam. Al Queda is dangerous. Muslims aren't dangerous. That's common sense.
Saying a person is Muslim is the same as saying they are Baptist - it only describes their faith. Obvious common sense.
Chances are you know people who are Muslim. I do. I live in Chicago, in the heartland of the U.S. The people I know aren't members of Al Queda, or radical, or militant. Many are religious, some aren't. They are professionals, business owners, hard-working people, moms & dads. They are real people, Americans - just like you. They aren't "Muslims," or "Islam," they are real people, not symbols or political fodder. That's common sense.
More common sense? There is no "Ground Zero Mosque." That name was invented to be political fodder. We all know it isn't true. It's a community center, being built two New York city blocks away from Ground Zero. Among other things, it will housing a basketball court, a culinary school, and a prayer room. Anyone can be a member - not just Muslims.
So, it's not a Mosque. And its not even located on Ground Zero.
That the community center will be LEED certified is very good. So I say, build it! Build that energy-saving, resource conserving, healthy green community center.
And tell the truth and cut the fodder. Al Queda is NOT covertly building a radical militant political symbol directly on the hallowed site of Ground Zero. It's not true. That's common sense.
The Author Needs A Clue; This
The Author Needs A Clue;
This is such a distressing issue for millions of Americans. The fact that the mosque is still being considered in this location demonstrates the insensitivity the builders have. It is not the government's position to oppose or condone the building of this "community centre". Religious freedom is a cornerstone of the United States. The responsibility lies on the shoulders of the community building it to have sense enough to build it elsewhere. This is not a sustainability issue, nor is it one belonging to a political party.
"Regardless of the
"Regardless of the controversy the development provides further evidence of the growing popularity of the LEED certification scheme"...
Regardless of the controversy?
It doesn't matter if it's LEED, Net zero energy usage, or all LED; it's not the right thing to do.
The author's lack of understanding in right and wrong is the only thing that is clear here...
One Muslim Imam said" in 50
One Muslim Imam said" in 50 years all Europe will be a Muslim continent without need to war or weapons" and when asked how, he answered that Muslims who already in Europe will multiply and reproduce and give more and more siblings While European tend to have less kids, so in 50 years the Majority will be Muslims and empower their law"!! very simple and easy, right? So, what I would like to say is that, many people in Europe and America are just insane to defend such people and use religious freedom to defend people who never believe in it unless if they want to deceive people in the west to get what they want. Many activists defend that mosque and unfortunately they don't know what they defending! they talking from American background but if they want to talk right , they should go to the middle east and see the real Islam and Muslims and how they treat Christians and other religions. by the way there are 2 versions of Islam, the real version and another one they introduce to naive people live in the west just to convince them that Islam is a good religion! one more thing, In Muslim history, when they invade a country or a city, they always build a mosque as a symbol of power and domination. and do you know what Muslims call 9/11 attacks? they call it N.Y invasion... People wake up! please spread this message to any naive who defend the devil. if you want to know more and what is real Islam, ask people from minorities live with Muslim Majority!!!Also there is a book written by an American or British writer who spent good time among Muslims, the name is" Islam Uncovered" it's good book if you want to know what is Islam about!
Gosh darn those angry
Gosh darn those angry Republicans. There's absolutely nothing to get your feathers in a bunch ABOUT. See, it's going to be a GREEN Mosque! Don't you silly kids know that if we make it a GREEN Mosque it makes eeeeverything A-OK? GREEN Mosques don't spit in the face of thousands of dead Americans. GREEN Mosques can't possibly exhibit bad taste, bad choices of location, or bad ideas! GREEN Mosques don't give the small percentage of hate-motivated Muslims (doesn't matter how small the percentage is or what the point really is, they're STILL going to view it as a win for them and a loss for us infidels) yet another reason to celebrate America's weakness (remember those full-page spreads the day after 9/11 of people dancing in the streets, celebrating our pain and loss?).
Oh oh OH, my bad. It's a GREEN Mosque
Idiots
Its sad are own president has
Its sad are own president has no loyalty to his own american citizens. Then on the other hand he refers to himself as black even though his white mom raised him. He is a bad man.
Good to see the commie
Good to see the commie (green) movement and the Islamist suicide bombers aligning.
PS - Latest poll has 68% of Americans opposing "green" mosque. That's sure a lot of Republicans.
I believe for sensitivity
I believe for sensitivity reasons the mosque should not be built so close to the location of ground zero. I do believe America is home of the free. The Muslim community is welcome as long as there belief is peaceful at all times for that is
what America is built on. If The Muslims are sending money home for the wrongful reasons against America then they should not build or live in America.
Since sustainable practices
Since sustainable practices have anything to do with communism... The middle east relies heavily on wasteful energy consumption. If you support our current infrastructures, you might as well write them a check. Which they can then use for the mosque.
I'm not sure why Republicans
I'm not sure why Republicans would be apoplectic about a private concern designing a new commercial space to LEED standards (unless they get a special government grant to do it).
