The industrial chemical Bisphenol A, which has been linked to developmental and reproductive problems and mimics estrogen, is present in roughly 91 percent of the Canadian population, particularly in teens aged 12 to 19.
Statistics Canada released new data Monday showing how pervasive chemicals and compounds such as BPA and mercury are in the country's population. The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) tested a representative sample of 5,600 Canadians aged 6 to 79 between 2007 and 2009, discovering that BPA and mercury were detected in the vast majority of participants.
The urine of 91 percent of those in the study contained detectable levels of BPA, the chemical used in polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins used in the lining of canned foods, as well as in hard plastic bottles and food containers.
Many are concerned about its impact on fetuses, infants and children, where it can cause developmental problems, as well as cancer, diabetes and other ailments. It is classified in the chemical category of gender benders because it mimics estrogen.
BPA has found itself in the spotlight in recent years, with some states and cities banning its use in baby bottles and childrens' products. According to Statistics Canada, higher concentrations of BPA were detected in the urine of children aged 6 to 10, compared to adults aged 40 to 79. Teens aged 12 to 19 showed the highest concentration of BPA.
The mean concentration of BPA across the Canadian population was 1.16 micrograms per liter, in line with international research pegging mean concentrations at between 1 to 3 micrograms per liter.
Mercury was detected in the blood samples of 88 percent of Canadians, present in higher concentrations in adults aged 20 to 79. The primary transfer of mercury from the environment to the human population is through the consumption of seafood.
Mercury can also cause developmental problems for fetuses and children, which has prompted governments to warn pregnant women and those whoe may become pregnant, about the consumption of fish and shellfish.
Statistics Canada also reported Monday that blood levels of lead in the general population have fallen dramatically since last measured 30 years ago, although it is detected in 100 percent of the population. Less than 1 percent of participants in the 2007-2009 survey had blood concentration levels at or near the intervention level -- 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood -- compared to 27 percent in 1978-79. The mean concentration was 1.34 micrograms per deciliter.

The fact that it mimics
The fact that it mimics estrogen has me wondering.
We live at the shore where you see a lot of men vacationers walking around shirtless. I have noticed a definite increase in young guys with puffy nipples and guys in general who could use a bra.
Not just the fat guys either.
Somethings going on, don't know if PBA is contributing.
And all the while, the
And all the while, the plastic companies have been denying that BPA is in any way harmful.
Show me the studies that
Show me the studies that didn't inject the mice that show it's harmful. Now go look what BPA is used for. You would prefer to remove a chemical used to stop botulism rather than look at the studies that show it's fine in the levels we use daily. It's meant to be in our urine as our liver is able to filter it out.
well I don't think this
well I don't think this actually refutes what they have been saying... If you read the thing, without making assumptions, they have not actually said that anything bad is happening that is dirrectly related to the BPA being in our systems.
"Tap water in a stainless
"Tap water in a stainless steel water bottle." Yip Bop.
I'm sure if you check most of the water lines in a newer house; they are some kind of plastic. Can you imagine if they started testing these plastic pipes and found BPA. It would ruin the homebuilders to come in a rip them out. I'm really surprised no one has looked into it. This might explain the higher levels of BPA over the last 15 years.
The old water pipes used to be made of copper and I think had a lead based weld to put the pipes together. This probably explains why the lead levels have dropped.
This is a reason not to buy
This is a reason not to buy bottled water. in time or exposed to heat, the chemicals in the bottle leach into the water. It's better to drink fresh water from the tap in a stainless steel water bottle.
Fresh water from the tap? I
Fresh water from the tap?
I recently received a notice from my city telling me to drink bottled water because the pipes to my house contain so much lead. A number of studies have shown that tap water in North America has in many instances contained illegal concentrations of chemicals like arsenic, radioactive substances like uranium, dangerous bacteria often found in sewage, and a soup of pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones.
Personally, I'll take my chances with bottled water.

There is no way they can say
There is no way they can say 100% of the population have traces of lead in their body. Thats like febreeze saying it kills 100% of the germs. BS imo.
BPA is supposed to drain out
BPA is supposed to drain out in our urine...and BPA is Stopping Botulism (sp?) from re-emerging! Please don't take BPA away! Those studies that showed it was bad was due to the idiots injecting BPA into the mice and not letting the mice's liver take care of it.
Same with Aspartame...studies that showed it was bad, was due to injection not ingestion methodology.
Tell that to my wife. They
Tell that to my wife. They thought she had MS and it turns out that she'd built up a ton of aspartame in her body which was causing numbness in her extremities. That stuff is toxic.
There is a disease called PKU
There is a disease called PKU that would cause this as Aspartame is made out of an amino acid that people with this disease can't digest.
There are MANY foods with this amino acid so she should be aware of the other foods that may cause this to come back if unknown. It's not just Aspartame. I agree people with PKU should stay away! a normal individual would have to drink 14 cans(5L) of diet drink to hit the daily recommended maximum.
your wife must be drinking
your wife must be drinking Gallons of Diet soda then, the amount of aspartame you would have to consume to get a blockage like that is ridiculous.
Did the author ever hear of
Did the author ever hear of proof reading? Although the general idea behind the article is easy to understand, the author can't be expected to be taken seriously if he/she writes this way.
"... aged 6 to 100"
What?
"Statistics Canada also reported Monday that blood levels of lead in the general population have fallen dramatically since last measured 30 years ago, although it is detected in 100 percent of the population."
Blood levels of lead? You mean lead levels in blood?
There is no way 100% of the Canadian population can have traces of lead in there body.
"...warn pregnant women and those whoe may become pregnant, about the consumption of fish and shellfish."
Even the text-box I'm using to type this response can tell me that 'whoe' is not a real word...
It's "their," not "there,"
It's "their," not "there," and you should say "bodies," not "body"... if you want to be a grammar Nazi, you best get your grammar right first! ;)
So you just reported how many
So you just reported how many people have "detectable levels", but don't say a damn thing about how that compares to levels shown to have adverse effects. Guess what? People have detectable levels of all sorts of things in their bloodstream, but it doesn't matter because there's not enough to care. This is just senseless fearmongering for a cheap headline, and a very sad reflection on "journalism" today.
Thank you. This was bugging
Thank you. This was bugging me too.
"The mean concentration was
"The mean concentration was 1.34 micrograms per deciliter."
It was indeed a mean concentration ;)
Wow...6-100...apparently you
Wow...6-100...apparently you aren't an adult until you hit 101. Probably should correct that. I'm assuming it's supposed to mean 6-10.
Scary!! Someone needs to step
Scary!! Someone needs to step in and lobby governments to ban BPA in all containers and plastics!
THAT'S ALL WE NEED IS A
THAT'S ALL WE NEED IS A LOBBIST IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS!!!! PLEASE
So that's why all Canadians
So that's why all Canadians are so nice! I think the Americans need to be pumped with this BPA thingie as well!
I am sure they are
I am sure they are considering how much pop they drink :) Probably that is a contributing factor to obesity, too, since estrogen causes weight gain.
