Teradata Commits to Cutting Carbon Intensity 45 Pct

DAYTON, OH — Teradata Corp. plans to reduce its global carbon intensity by 45 percent by 2013, the hardware and software vendor said last week.

The move is part of the company's membership in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders program. Teradata joined the program in 2008, and completed its base year reporting last year.

Its emissions reduction target will be based on 2008 emissions levels, measured against the number of Teradata Purpose-Built platforms shipped annually.

In its most recent Corporate Social Responsibility report (PDF), Teradata revealed its performance in absolute greenhouse gas emissions, but had not yet begun reporting how its 2009 performance measured up against the Climate Leaders goal.

In 2008, the company's global greenhouse gas emissions were 15,725 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Worldwide emissions increased in 2009 to 16,987 metric tons.

Approximately 15 percent of its 7,400 global employees and contractors work virtually, the company said. It also plans to utilize aggressive virtualization in order to reduce its physical servers in its data centers 40 percent to 127. Building Automation Systems and installing specially coated glass and window treatments also helped to save the company 250,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually.
