GRI Seeks to Recast Sustainability Messages in a Positive Light

The Global Reporting Initiative is looking for positive sustainability images for its website relaunch later this year.

The organization, creator of the widely used GRI sustainability reporting framework, is holding a competition seeking "compelling, engaging images related to sustainability" with a "positive and aspirational" tone.

"Sustainability reporting should be a positive message — organizations can use the reporting process to mitigate their impacts on the planet, economy and society," said Crystal Crawford, GRI's senior communications coordinator. "GRI believes that sustainability reporting will help organizations drive the change to a sustainable global economy and this a very positive thing."

In 2008, Getty Images warned that images with a negative tint to them like melting ice floes and polar bears were on the brink of becoming cliches due to overuse.

The GRI competition is open to photographers and artists, and submissions can be any size, from one image to photo essays. Winning images will be used on GRI's new website, social media sites and publications.

The GRI's website will include biographies on winning artists and links to their website; winners will also be announced in GRI's newsletter.
