A Note from the Editor
By Eric Olson -- BSR
Focusing on the Opportunity Side of Regulation
Our feature article this week presses the point that, for most businesses, the salient feature of the climate legislation working its way through the U.S. Congress is the money we are likely to SAVE via energy efficiency. And we are talking about a lot of money -- certainly more than cap-and-trade will cost us. You wouldn't know that following most major news coverage, but at least it's not health care reform ...
As if to reinforce the opportunity before us, several companies issued their latest performance updates this week, most of them showing positive financial results even as they exceeded self-imposed GHG reduction goals. Gap, which has faced as many business challenges as any other company over the past year, exceeded its climate goals by almost 2x. How, by spending extra money? No way -- their smart and comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship led to savings, including $20 million a year just from moving to better containers at distribution centers.
J&J took an interesting approach by creating a carbon dioxide reduction capital fund to pay for reducing its emissions; the $124 million in capital put toward these projects so far will generate a better than 17 percent percent average rate of return.
Now imagine a situation in which the financial incentives become stronger, the capital more plentiful, the objectives more inspiring, and employees more inspired. This the opportunity side of regulation.

Unlocking Energy Efficiency in the U.S. Economy
This report examines how the nation can increase energy efficiency in buildings and other non-transportation sectors by using existing technology and methods. Doing so could yield a 23 percent drop in energy use by 2020, save the U.S. economy $1.2 trillion and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.1 gigatons annually, the study says.
