Taking Care of Business

By Joel Makower

Our third annual "State of Green Business" report will be out this week, the fruits of the research undertaken for nearly six months by GreenBiz.com managing editor Matthew Wheeland and associate editor Tilde Herrera. The report covers 10 major trends in green business, along with the GreenBiz Index, a suite of 20 indicators that assess how, and how well, companies are doing from an environmental perspective -- and whether all the the announcements and achievements we report on every day are actually moving the needle.

As this is being written, we're putting the finishing touches on the report. It will be available as a free download from GreenBiz.com late Wednesday. I'll present this year's findings at the State of Green Business Forums, this Thursday in San Francisco, and again at the Forum on February 9 in Chicago. The San Francisco event is nearly sold out, only a few seats remain, so don't delay if you plan to come.

Meanwhile, one of the Forum's sponsors, and the host of the SF event, PG&E Corp., last week was among the top three companies named to Corporate Knights magazine's sixth annual Global 100 list of most sustainable firms. Congrats to them and all of the others.

Also of note this week is the third of a three-part series by David Bent, head of Business Strategies at the U.K.-based Forum for the Future, on how to pinpoint the business case for sustainability. All three are must-reads, and in case you missed them, you can find part one and part two on GreenBiz.com.
