Taking Care of Business
By Joel Makower
"Where has all the money gone?" sounds like a refrain from a '60s folk song, but it's a topic of very current interest and concern, as the U.S. government's stimulus money hits the streets. Billions in funding for clean technology already has been announced, with billions more to come. (We've created a shortcut to stimulus-related stories, at Greenbiz.com/stimulus.)
Over the past few weeks, GreenBiz.com's Sarah Terry-Cobo and Matthew Wheeland tracked and mapped a portion of the government's largesse -- $5.5 billion worth -- sent to the General Services Administration for construction or renovation of federal buildings such as courthouses and post offices. The emphasis, however, is to convert the buildings into "high performance green buildings," including adding solar panels or small wind turbines, and weatherizing old, leaky structures.
You can view the fruits of their labor in our interactive GreenBiz Stimulus Funds Locator, allowing you to see which of about 250 buildings have been targeted, and how much each received. We hope it will help you identify opportunities to tap into federal programs for your own company's benefit. It also directs you to more information about GSA's efforts.
Carbon Offsets Study: Speaking of stimulus, we'd like to give a final push for participation in the Carbon Offsetting Trends Survey 2009 that we're conducting with EcoSecurities and Baker McKenzie. We're in the last few days of collecting responses.
We hope you will take the few minutes required to ensure that your opinions are reflected in our findings. Your responses are invaluable to the success of this study and we'd like to make this the biggest, best and most beneficial report to date. The survey takes just a few minutes to complete. You can access it here.
