Taking Care of Business

By Joel Makower

Getting employees engaged and educated on sustainability practices and a company's specific green goals can save millions by boosting efficiency and making those goals more likely to succeed, as we reported recently.

Kevin Moss agrees, more or less. Moss, who heads corporate social responsibility for British Telecom's North American operations, writes this week that the study cited above neglects one key intangible benefit: Trust. "If we declare a corporate responsibility value through our environmental investments we are expected to apply that value consistently," he writes this week. "Therefore it is important that environmental values are applied consistently throughout the company and incorporated into the work of all employees -- not just Corporate Social Responsibility professionals."

Moss isn't the only one chiming in on employee engagement. GreenBiz.com associate editor Tilde Herrera writes this week about a volunteer effort that is bringing on board some three million Americans, as part of the Great American Cleanup. She quotes the program's organizer, who notes that the attributes of a good volunteer are similar to those of a good corporate employee: "the ability to work in teams, they're very self directed, they help others in projects that aren't necessarily their own." As such, research has shown that volunteer programs help build better employees.

Finally, Marc Stoiber, VP Green Innovation at Maddock Douglas, a North American innovation agency, writes this week about the bridge between employee engagement and innovation. His message: Engagement "can be more than an idea pipeline for getting green innovation. When done properly, it can create tremendous goodwill among your staff, which ripples outward to create wonderful PR."

Put these three stories together and the message is implicit if not explicit: There is a wealth of untapped potential awaiting companies that align their employee engagement efforts with sustainability goals.
