Taking Care of Business
By Joel Makower, Chairman & Executive Editor

I'm just back from our VERGE London event, another terrific and diverse assemblage of professionals and thought leaders. Oft-chilly London has warmed quickly to VERGE's theme of technology convergence and the benefits it brings to business, society, and the planet. Grateful thanks to our U.K. VERGE partners, SustainAbility, the pioneering London-based think tank. Its co-founder, John Elkington, was our closing keynote, a conversation that centered on technology's two-edged sword.

In the next few days, we'll begin posting videos from the London event, which registered users of VERGE Virtual will be able to watch for free. For now, you can read stories written from the event, several of which can be found below.

How to Design a Data-Driven Sustainability Program: That's the title of this week's webcast, Tuesday at 11 am ET / 8 am PT. I'm looking forward to a fascinating conversation among Columbia Sportswear's Kristen Sagan, Jones Lang LaSalle's Michael Jordan, and CA Technologies' Lara Greden. We'll be looking at how companies are building a business case for automating sustainability management, and how these tools can improve company performance. The webcast is free, but registration is required.

Also This Week: Dave Kepler, Dow's chief sustainability officer, describes the key "building blocks" of green chemistry ... Jennifer Inez Ward reports on the Global Reporting Initiative's new media industry sustainability guidelines ... Marc Gunther has some bones to pick with farmed fish ... and Jennifer Kho offers up an insightful Q&A with SAP's sustainability chief, Peter Graf.
