The Green IT Perspective

By Preston Gralla

People in the U.S. have long been smug when it comes to technology and IT -- we're the world leader, it's always been that way, and we assume that it will always be that way. But when it comes to green IT, that's not at all the case, and if we're not careful, things may get a lot worse.

As I write in my blog post "Report: Korea Is Leaving U.S. Behind in Green IT," South Korea is better positioned than the U.S. to take the world leadership in Green IT. There's a simple reason for that: Its government has put financial and regulatory muscle behind it. The report says that it's time for the U.S. to follow suit. If not, we'll be left even further behind, and may well lose our leadership green-related technologies such as cloud computing.

One company that certainly isn't ceding Green IT leadership to anyone is Cisco. In fact, as I write in my blog post "Cisco: We See our Future in the Smart Grid," to a certain extent, Cisco is betting its future on Green IT, primarily through its work for the Smart Grid. Cisco expects that data centers will need plenty of new hardware and communication devices for the Smart Grid, and so it's building those.

And it's even going to build smart devices for people at home to manage their electricity use via the Smart Grid. Cisco's plans are one example of how private industry can help get the U.S. gain the lead in Green IT. But as Korea's success shows, we need more than that. We need government money as well.
