The Green IT Perspective
By Matthew Wheeland
The third week of 2010 brings yet another raft of green IT news, this time ranging across all of our usual haunts. First up, Symantec released its annual State of the Data Center report, finding in part that mid-sized enterprises are more likely than smaller and larger enterprises to adopt data center technologies like virtualization and cloud computing, but other issues are taking precedence in companies as they deal with tight budgets and staffs. Although some experts are predicting a turnaround in IT budgets, we may still be in a holding pattern until the economy picks itself up in a more definitive fashion.
On the green OEM front, we've got a report out from Cupertino that finds Apple is still opposing calls for it to publish a CSR report, even though the company has been much lauded for embracing green practices in its products of late.
And finally, I sat it on a highly informative seminar on choosing a green e-waste recycler, put on by the EPA's Chris Newman. The online session explored some of the pitfalls that face companies looking to lighten their load of unwanted or end-of-life electronics. I lay out the basics of the session in my blog post here: "How to Find the Greenest E-Waste Recycler."
