The Green IT Perspective
By Matthew Wheeland
Sorry for the delay in sending the newsletter out today, but we had good reason:
The day the entire world has awaited is finally here.
Today, Steve Jobs unveiled Apple's "newest creation" -- and boy oh boy did it not disappoint.
Unless you're the planet. Whoops.
As I wrote earlier this week in "Will Apple's Tablet Save the Earth? Don't Hold Your Breath," adding another gadget to the already overflowing pile of electronics the western world considers "essential" is not going to solve any of the significant environmental problems the entire world already faces.
Instead of getting a truly green gadget, one that was somehow made using 100 percent recycled material, powered by the sun, and useful only for designing cleantech gadgets and organic clothing, we got .... the iPad. The headline of my latest post pretty well sums it up: "Apple's new iPad is Deep Green, but a Planet-Saver? Nope."
In other, more promising green IT news this week, we've got details about Facebook's green data center in "Facebook Status Update: We're Opening a Green Data Center," as well as news about the year's first Earth Day event in "D&H to Spread Green IT Through the Channel."
We'll have more on the iSlate as events warrant. In the meantime, feel free to weigh in on how you feel about Apple's newest gadget in the comments of my blog post, or by email: Editor@GreenerComputing.com.
