The Green IT Perspective
By Preston Gralla
Green IT had become a centerpiece of enterprises' overall IT strategy, but surprisingly, that doesn't appear to be the case with U.S. colleges. As I write in "U.S. Colleges: Who Cares about Green IT?" (http://www.greenercomputing.com/blog/2009/09/14/us-colleges-who-cares-about -green-it), a recent survey found that less than 25 percent of IT pros in higher education said that saving energy is "very important."
Sounds disturbing, doesn't it? In fact, though, the survey may be somewhat misleading. That's because even though colleges say that Green IT is a low priority, it appears that they are taking significant steps to green their IT infrastructure. Some 38 percent of college IT departments have cut energy costs over the past year. For details, check out U.S. Colleges: Who Cares about Green IT?"
This week we've got an in-depth feature from Steve Visconti, who in "Six Tips For Green (and Greenwash-Free) Data Center Storage" explores how IT managers can get past the rampant (and sometimes misleading) green claims for data storage devices to find real savings and energy efficiency.
In the feature, Steve also introduces two new metrics for storage devices: Gbs/W, and IOPs/W. To learn about these, check out "Six Tips For Green (and Greenwash-Free) Data Center Storage."
