Making Supply Chain Changes from Whole Cloth

By Jonathan Bardelline

When it comes to greening and cleaning up products and their supply chains, companies have a lot of options. Picking safer and less toxic materials, using smaller and lighter packaging, shortening supply chains and giving back to non-profits are all strategies that are well within the reach of most companies and spreading throughout industries.

While some companies make small changes one at a time, others are trying wholesale changes in their operations, while others, like the recently-launched underwear company PACT, try to make good choices from the start.

The new company is putting out organic cotton undies, using scrap material and compostable mailers for packaging, giving a percentage of sales to various non-profits and utilizing a manufacturing supply chain that is confined to a 100-mile radius. But not all of the companies choices might be deemed the "best" choices, and they struggled at times over what would be the wisest path over details like if they should add spandex to the underwear to make it last longer.

Not all companies can start off with so many sustainable actions in practice, but many are improving, and just this month we've also seen Seventh Generation set higher post-consumer recycled content goals for its bottles, Cadbury agree to remove palm oil from its Dairy Milk chocolate bars and Ford expand use of a painting process that cuts down on time, energy and CO2 emissions.
