One Year Into Walmart's Sustainability Index, What Results?

One year after Walmart unveiled its Sustainability Index, Joel Makower, executive editor of GreenBiz.com, looks at what the Index has and has not accomplished.

Although the creation of Walmart's Sustainable Product Index and Sustainability Consortium has heightened conversations about the interaction among products, sustainability, supply chains and life cycle impacts, the Index hasn't resulted in much else, leading Makower to conclude:

"This is both more and less than meets the eye. Walmart continues to deserve credit for its commitment and audacious goals, and for the ripples it has created. And, to be fair, no one expected miracles in just twelve months. But Walmart and its suppliers and partners have unwittingly demonstrated how hard all of this is..."
