The Many Paths to Better Packaging

By Jonathan Bardelline

In this edition of our GreenerDesign newsletter, we see a wide range of news illustrating the fact that there is no single solution for bringing sustainability to packaging.

We've got SunChips switching to compostable material for its chip bags, Swiss Army converting to packaging with less - and recyclable - plastic, Marks & Spencer using wrappers that turn into flowers, Peerless Coffee swapping out disposable delivery boxes in favor of reusable plastic bins, and research from IBM and Stanford that could lead to plastics that can be recycled over and over without degrading.

While many of those packaging efforts are just starting or only being implemented on small scales, Cisco gives us a look at how their packaging project has saved $24 million and 4.5 million pounds of materials a year.

These companies may be taking different paths, but they've got the same goal.
